UNC Lactation Program

The mission of UNC’s Lactation Program is to provide integrated, evidence-based lactation care for the mom-baby dyad, thereby empowering all mothers to meet their breastfeeding goals.

The UNC Lactation Program is continuously evaluating and updating our management protocols. Our current protocols, posted on this site, reflect our interdisciplinary team’s consensus on the limited literature on management of breastfeeding-associated pain. For more information on clinical management of the mother-baby dyad, see The Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine Clinical Protocols.

Clinical Services

We provide inpatient lactation consultation for expecting mothers, postpartum families, and breastfeeding mothers or infants admitted to the hospital.

Phone support for breastfeeding is available through our Warmline at (984)-974-8078, or toll free at (866) 428-5608.

We see mothers and infants in our outpatient clinics in both the general pediatrics and obstetrics clinics at UNC.
