Laquasha Roache
Laquasha Roache
Laquasha (she/her), better known as Quay, is the Founder and Doula of Hibiscus Healing. She is a three-time trained full-spectrum community-based doula and certified lactation counselor (CLC) who is incredibly passionate about postpartum care and lactation. Quay has many roles, including mommy to a sweet, charismatic, and energetic boy. Through her experiences of becoming a young Black-Caribbean mother in college, her identity as a working-poor class person, and her Gender and Women’s Studies degree, Quay strives for systemic change in much more than birth work. Quay uses all her knowledge and experience to decolonize, dismantle, and reimagine birth work so that all who experience reproductive stages of trying to conceive, pregnancy, labor, birth, and fetal loss know that there are safe spaces and people for them. Hibiscus Healing believes authenticity, humility, and love thrive together. Quay continuously challenges the medical-industrial complex and societal norms to remind her families of the power they already possess: to live in their truth, make informed decisions, be heard, and be protected. Through education, cultural competency, compassion, resources, and more, Quay is dedicated to improving and bearing witness to all experiences surrounding birth and parenthood.
Millie Femme
Millie Femme
My name is Tenisha Tyler, and I go by the name Milli Femme… short for Millennial Woman. I believe all women should have safe and positive birth experiences. When I notice someone on their pregnancy journey, I immediately ask “How are we feeling?” Most of the time the response includes an exhausted, “I’m fine.” For which I ask again, “How are we feeling?” And then I get the truth, for which I understand. Because, as a mother of a large family, I have been there… 5 times. I feel the immediate need to provide physical, emotional, and informational support to empower women in their journey. However, in my most recent experience, I faced medical challenges. Had a birth worker supported me, the stress and complications wouldn’t have been as severe. My position would have been heard if more than one voice rang out with me… standing beside me. Now I have a choice: I could let my experience haunt me, or I can be that person I needed, for someone else. I’m choosing the latter.
