In partnership with the March of Dimes and the Dean of the School of Medicine, the Center is very pleased to announce a new program focusing on the health needs of mothers of babies receiving care in UNC's intensive care nursery. These mothers have a need for special attention to their medical conditions, stress, emotional well being, and overall health status. The Postpartum Plus Prevention Project (P4) is led by a highly experienced Advisory Council. The members of this Council are listed below.
This program is available to all mothers who have babies in the UNC Newborn Critical Care Center. The program is coordinated by a certified nurse midwife, Kim Hamden, who has experience providing prenatal care, postpartum care and well woman services.
Kim Hamden checks in with mothers in the NICU to see if they have immediate postpartum or healthcare needs/questions. If needed, she can provide medical services to these mothers. Kim will assist moms in scheduling their postpartum visit and then following up with them to see how it went. For mothers unable to return to their physicians for this visit, she will provide the visit during her Wednesday afternoon postpartum clinic. Over the space of a year, she will work with these mothers to help them stay healthy. The mothers will receive a tailored wellness kit three months after giving birth. They will receive notes and calls from the coordinator for a year.
The goal of this program is to address health service gaps and missed prevention opportunities experienced by mothers of preterm babies. Mothers of babies in the NCCC will experience comprehensive care as they receive support and assistance focused on their unique healthcare needs. Looking ahead to the future, it is hoped that this program will help reduce risks for mothers who decide to have future pregnancies and keep moms healthy as they care for themselves and their families.
