The Maternal Transport Program serves pregnant women who have an emergency during their pregnancy and are transfered to the North Carolina Women’s Hospital in Chapel Hill. The role of the maternal transport program is to facilitate clear and consistent communication among the patient's health care providers. This includes insuring that systems are in place to receive key information about the pregnant woman. It also includes sharing updates with referring providers regarding the patient's status and health care needs while they are in the hospital and in their transition home.
Pregnant women who are hospitalized at UNC receive social work support and have access to other services around discharge planning. If they experience a fetal or infant demise, they are connected with the hospital chaplain services. If their infants are born prematurely or has congenital anomalies, they may be eligible for additional services from the Center.
